Charter Boat Fishing

he scallop season opened July 1 st and scallops are very plentiful at St. Marks and also Lanark Village over in Franklin County. Remember to display a dive flag when you are out of the boat and in the water or a fine will ruin a perfectly good day.

Fishing continues to be good in our area and plenty of trout are being caught on the flats as well as out in 14 and 15 feet of water. The Berkley Gulp in the 3 and 4 inch sizes fished under the Cajun Thunder is what most folks use now because the shrimp have moved offshore and live shrimp won’t be available until the first of August.

The Ochlockonee Shoals is holding plenty of trout and Dog Island Reef is also a hot spot right now. Live pilchards are working better around Dog Island and if you can throw a cast net Tyson Cove is full of bait. Plenty of flounder are being caught fishing on the bottom on the offshore reefs and structures and cobia are being caught like never before. Live bait is the best bait but they’ll hit almost anything when feeding. Spanish mackerel are still around in good numbers and just look for the schools of bait offshore and the Spanish won’t be far behind. Reds are still being caught and the back end of Alligator Harbor might be a good place to try. This is a great place for a small boat and a Kayak.

Offshore fishing for grouper continues to be good and plenty of red snapper and amberjack are being caught. Live or dead bait on your favorite rock or live bottom in 65 to 75 feet of water should produce fish. Remember to use circle hooks when fishing for reef fish.

Know your limits and be sure and leave a float plan with someone before heading out for a day on the water. Good luck and good fishing!
